To become a loco pilot in Indian Railways, the candidate must be at least 10th pass. The age limit of the candidate should be between 18 to 30 years (age relaxation is given for reserved category).
How is recruitment done
- Aptitude Test: It tests mental ability, decision making ability and mathematical knowledge.
- Written Test: Candidates have to appear in the Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB).
- Document Verification: The documents of the candidates who are successful in both the above examinations are verified.

Salary of Loco Pilot
- Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP): The initial salary is Rs 19,900 (Level-2). The total salary can be from Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 by adding allowances to it.
- Loco Pilot (Senior): Their pay scale ranges from Rs 35,000 to Rs 55,000.
- Chief Loco Pilot: The salary of an experienced driver can reach Rs 60,000 or more.
Expected Salary under 8th Pay Commission
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to increase the salary by 20-25%. This can lead to the starting salary of an Assistant Loco Pilot being around Rs 25,000, while the salary of an experienced Loco Pilot can reach Rs 70,000 or more.
