ITR Fraud: PIB has shared a screenshot and told that many people are getting refund related messages which are fake. In this, it has been asked to click on a link which can be a virus.
The last date for filing ITR has passed on 31st July. Now people are waiting for their refund. Many people have already received refund and the rest are still in process. Meanwhile, a new type of scam has increased everyone’s concern. People’s accounts are being emptied in the name of tax refund.
In this, the thugs are requesting people to update their account details by saying that they will get a refund. Those who are doing this under false pretenses, their accounts are getting empty.
PIB has done a fact check regarding this and said that the Income Tax Department is not sending any such message. He said that this message is fake and people should try to avoid such frauds. Along with this, it has also been said that handing over your personal information to an unknown person should be avoided.
What is message?
In this message being sent in English, it is written, “Your income tax refund of Rs XXXX has been approved. Please verify your account number XXXX. If it is incorrect, then update your bank account information by visiting this link. Describing it as fake, PIB has said that the Income Tax Department has not sent any such message. Avoid falling prey to such messages.

What to do when you get such messages?
The Income Tax Department does not ask for account number, PIN or any other personal information from you. Therefore, if you receive any such message or email, do not respond to it. Do not share any information related to your account, debit and credit cards. Do not click on the link given there at all. It is possible that it is some kind of virus and it opens the way for entry in your phone.
Do not open any attachment that comes with the message. Anti virus and firewall can be used to protect phone-laptop from virus. Along with this, you can also report this message of fake ITR refund. You can send information about that website or phone number to webmanager@incometax.gov.in. You can also send a copy of it to cert-in.org.
