Belated ITR Deadline: The deadline for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the assessment year 2023-24 has passed. The last date to file ITR was July 31, 2023. However, don’t panic if the last date is over. There are still options available to you. Some fees have to be paid and thus you can file belated ITR.
When the time to file ITR is over, the return filed later is called belated ITR.
How to file belated ITR?
The last date for filing belated ITR for FY 2022-23 (Assessment Year 2023-24) is December 31, 2023. However, you will have to pay a late filing fee. You may have to pay a fine of up to Rs 5,000 for missing the deadline. But there is a genuine explanation as to why you could not file ITR and if the officer is satisfied with the reason, you will not have to pay the penalty.
Late filing fee/penalty is levied for belated ITR filing under section 234F of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, as a relief to small taxpayers, the late filing fee will not exceed Rs 1,000 if the total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh.
