EPFO’s big decision, Aadhaar no longer valid for proof of date of birth

EPFO: UIDAI had said in a circular that Aadhaar number can be used to establish the identity of a person after verification but it is not proof of date of birth. 

EPFO Update: Retirement fund body Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has said that Aadhaar issued by UIDAI will no longer be considered a valid document for proof of date of birth. By issuing a circular on January 16, 2024, EPFO ​​said that after the guidelines given by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), it has been decided to remove Aadhaar from the list of valid documents.

According to the circular issued by EPFO, Aadhaar is also being removed from the list of valid documents for correction in date of birth during EPFO ​​related work. UIDAI had said in a circular on December 22, 2023 that Aadhaar number can be used to establish the identity of a person after verification but it is not proof of date of birth.

UIDAI had also said that many institutions like EPFO ​​are using Aadhaar to verify the date of birth. Referring to the orders of several High Courts, he had said that Aadhaar is not a valid proof of date of birth. Documents like birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, mark sheet issued by a recognized government board or university, PAN (Permanent Account Number) card are used as valid proof for the date of birth.

According to EPFO, if the Civil Surgeon has issued any such medical certificate in which the date of birth is mentioned, then EPFO ​​will also recognize it. In 2018, the Supreme Court had given a decision regarding Aadhaar card. The court had said where Aadhaar card can be used. Then the court had said that there is no need to link bank account and mobile number with Aadhaar.
