After running the government for four years, Hemant Soren, embroiled in the alleged land scam, had to step down from the post of Chief Minister. After interrogation for more than 6 hours, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Hemant Soren.
In Jharkhand, which came into existence on 15 November 2000, till now 6 leaders have become CM and three of them have been arrested. In the history of two and a half decades, President’s rule has been imposed in Jharkhand thrice, while only CM Raghubar Das could complete his tenure of 5 years.
There have been six Chief Ministers in Jharkhand so far, out of which three have been arrested. Before Hemant Soren, his father Shibu Soren and Madhu Koda were arrested. Babulal Marandi, Arjun Munda and Raghuvar Das did not have to face such a situation. All three have been Chief Ministers of BJP.
Why did Madhu Koda have to go to jail?
While being the Chief Minister, Madhu Koda was trapped in a corruption case. Madhu Koda, who ran the coalition government with UPA from 2006 to 2008, had to go to jail. He was accused of money laundering and disproportionate assets. Koda was allegedly involved in a mining scam. CBI and ED alleged that Koda had taken bribe in exchange for allocation of coal mines when he was CM.
According to a report, Koda and his associates earned Rs 4 thousand crores in this way. His assets worth Rs 144 crore were seized in a money laundering case. After his arrest in 2009, Koda got bail in 2013. In 2017, he was convicted and sentenced to 3 years in prison with a fine of Rs 25 lakh. He was also convicted in four more cases of hawala transactions and a disproportionate assets case.
Shibu Soren has also been arrested
Hemant Soren’s father and former CM Shibu Soren has also been arrested. Shibu Soren was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court on 5 December 2006. In 1994, he was convicted in the murder case of his personal secretary Shashi Nath Jha. Shibu Soren was the Coal Minister in the Manmohan Singh government at that time.
However, in 2007, the Delhi High Court acquitted Shibu Soren and pulled up the CBI for lack of evidence. In April 2018, the Supreme Court had also upheld the decision of the Delhi High Court.
