The Central Government is helping on a large scale in realizing the dream of having a house in rural areas. Actually, the government had implemented the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) from April 1, 2016. The target is to construct 2.95 crore houses under this scheme. In comparison, the government had completed the construction of 2.50 crore houses. According to the information given by the government, the target of construction of 2.95 crore pucca houses will be achieved by the stipulated deadline of March 31, 2024.
How money is transferred: Let us tell you that under PMAY-G, central assistance is released directly to the state/union territory by considering the state/union territory as one unit. The release of these funds to the beneficiaries in different districts/blocks/gram panchayats is done by the respective State Government/Union Territory Administration.
The amount of central share released to States/UTs for construction of houses under PMAY-G during the last five years i.e. financial years 2018-19 to 2022-23 was approximately Rs 1,60,853.38 crore.
Benefits of the scheme: The Central Government provides financial assistance to eligible citizens in rural areas to construct pucca houses. According to the official website, if the house under the scheme is built in the plain area, then the amount approved by the government is Rs 1.2 lakh and if it is built in the hilly area, then the amount will be Rs 1.3 lakh.
Along with financial assistance, the beneficiary is also given 90 days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, (MNREGA), which is effectively around Rs 18000.
