Jan Dhan Yojana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appreciated the achievement of PM Jan Dhan Yojana. The number of Jan Dhan accounts has crossed 50 crore. PM Modi said that this is an important milestone for the scheme launched in 2014.
As per the latest report submitted by the banks, the total number of Jan Dhan accounts has crossed 50 crore till 9th August 2023. Of these accounts, 56 per cent accounts belong to women and 67 per cent accounts have been opened in rural/semi-urban areas.
Modi said on X (first Twitter), ‘ It is heartening to see that more than half of the total accounts opened are of our women power. 67% of the accounts were opened in rural and semi-urban areas. We are also ensuring that the benefits of financial inclusion reach every nook and corner of our country.

“The deposits in these accounts exceed Rs 2.03 lakh crore and around 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued free of cost in these accounts,” said a PIB release. The average balance in PMJDY accounts is Rs 4,076 and more than 5.5 crore PMJDY accounts are getting DBT benefits.
PMJDY offers several benefits to the account holders like bank account without minimum balance requirement, free RuPay debit card with inbuilt accident insurance of Rs 2 lakh and overdraft facility up to Rs 10,000.

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a national mission for financial inclusion which aims to provide affordable access to financial facilities including basic savings and deposit accounts, credit, insurance and pension. Individuals who do not have any other account can open a Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account in any local bank or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) branch through the scheme.
