Bishnugarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer BN Prasad said that the white-backed vulture comes under the first schedule of endangered species.

An injured vulture of endangered species was found in a dam in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. It had a metal ring on one of its legs, on which Dhaka was written.

Injured vulture found in the waters of Konar dam

Bishnugarh sub-divisional police officer BN Prasad said that the white-backed vulture comes under the first schedule of endangered species. He said that a group of fishermen saw the injured vulture in the waters of Konar dam on Monday and informed the forest and police officials.

An inscription ‘gpobox-2624, Dhaka, b67’ and a tracking device were found with the vulture. Also found was a note: ‘If found, please contact john.malot@rspb.org.uk.’

This is what the police suspect

The forest officials took the eagle for treatment and will keep it under observation for some time. The police suspect that a Dhaka-based bird researcher named John Mallott from the UK-based organisation Royal Society for Protection of Birds released the vulture after attaching a tracker device, a solar radio collar, to track the movement of the bird as it travelled from Dhaka to Jharkhand.

The official ruled out any connection to the unrest in Bangladesh, saying, “Though no conspiracy is suspected, further investigation is underway.”
