Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam was being interrogated since 11 am today, after which ED has confirmed his arrest. ED had summoned Alamgir on Sunday. He was asked to appear before the agency at the zonal office in Ranchi on May 14. He appeared before the ED on Tuesday, when the investigating agency interrogated him for 10 hours. After this he was called again for questioning today.
ED had raided on 6th May
On May 6, ED had raided the apartment of Jahangir Alam, the domestic servant of Alamgir Alam’s personal secretary Sanjeev Lal, and recovered more than Rs 37 crore in cash. After the raid, both Alam and Sanjeev Lal were arrested. Recently, ED raided many places in Ranchi, during which this cash was recovered. Many machines were also brought to count the cash, all were Rs 500 notes. Apart from this, the agency officials had also recovered some jewelery from the flat of Jahangir Alam.
Who is Alamgir Alam?
Alamgir Alam has been a 4-time Congress MLA from Pakur Assembly and is currently the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Rural Development in the state government. Before this, Alamgir Alam was also the Speaker of Jharkhand Assembly from 20 October 2006 to 12 December 2009. After inheriting politics, Alamgir entered politics by winning the election of Sarpanch. He became MLA for the first time in 2000 and since then has become MLA 4 times. In 2005, Alamgir Alam was elected MLA from Pakur.
He defeated Akil Akhtar of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha by 18066 votes. In 2009, JMM’s Akil Akhtar became MLA. But in 2014 there was a sudden political change. Alamgir Alam, who was an MLA from Congress, then contested the elections on the ticket of Jharkhand Mukt Morcha and won.
Took oath as minister with CM Champai
Alamgir Alam’s stature in Congress in Jharkhand can be gauged from the fact that after Hemant Soren went to jail, there was talk of making Alamgir Alam the Deputy CM in the new Champai Soren government formed in Jharkhand.
He took oath along with CM Champai Soren. However, there was deep resentment among the MLAs towards the party leadership due to the repetition of old faces from the Congress quota in the Champai cabinet. This MLA Hemant Soren was demanding to change all the faces of Congress quota who were included in the cabinet this time.
