The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has advised carrying out ‘DigiLocker’ process of uploading required supporting documents with a view to reduce the time taken by applicants for obtaining passports. The new decision states that before submitting passport applications online, applicants must first upload the mandatory documents on DigiLocker.
DigiLocker will have this advantage
As per the new document application process, ‘Applicants will no longer be required to carry their original documents if they have already been uploaded through DigiLocker.’
The DigiLocker process aims to streamline application processing time and reduce the amount of document verification at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras located in different regions.
The Ministry has also expanded the acceptance of Aadhaar documents through DigiLocker for online application submission.
Use these documents for passport
The government has provided a list of acceptable documents that will serve as proof of residence. These include Aadhaar Card, Current Ration Card, Driving License, Electricity Bill, Income Tax Assessment and others.
You can use DigiLocker to save important and official documents like Educational Certificate, Birth Certificate, PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Passport and Voter ID Card. You can also access DigiLocker from web browser through ddigilocker.gov.in app.
