A key finance committee of Parliament has pulled up the government for paying less remuneration to Anganwadi workers and helpers and asked that their salaries be revised commensurate with their work.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a key financial committee of the Lok Sabha, has also directed the government to provide facilities like drinking water and toilets in anganwadis in a time-bound manner.

The committee talked about a proper increase in salary in the report

The Ministry of Women and Child Development, in its report presented in the Parliament on Wednesday, has asked to amend and increase the remuneration of Anganwadi workers and assistants.

A large number of posts of Anganwadi workers are vacant.

It expressed dismay over the fact that despite earlier reminders about the low and unattractive salaries of Anganwadi workers and helpers, the ministry did not do much about it. The committee said that there are a large number of vacancies on the posts of Anganwadi workers and assistants due to low salaries.

‘Role of Anganwadi workers cannot be ignored’

The panel said, ‘The important role played by these Anganwadi workers and assistants during the period of Kovid cannot be ignored, as they have to provide primary health care and immunization, supplementary nutrition Along with performing its core responsibilities

related to educating families about family planning measures, etc., it was entrusted with the work of distribution of rations. Therefore, the committee feels that the time has come that the Anganwadi workers should get due recognition for the selfless and continuous services rendered by them.

In this context, the panel headed by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary of Congress has asked the government to revise

their salaries in such a way that the benefits and salaries given to them are commensurate with the work they are doing. And for this the ministry should also take necessary budgetary support.

Toilets in Anganwadi Centres’

The panel further said that since many Anganwadi Centers are functioning from temporary structures and semi-pucca premises, which may not have toilet or drinking water facilities, the Ministry needs to provide mobile The proposal to provide toilets should be considered in Anganwadi centers which do not have toilets.
